I think this update is marvellous. It will make people think more when creating farming builds. And lol no farming isn't dead, i already have 2 builds which do not rely on AoE Damage.
Which brings me to another subject. Does Aftershock count as a AoE? It only does damage once?

This is an excellent point. I took my mesmer out to test. Sure enough, enemies are perfectly happy to take 147 points of damage by casting with backfire on them, but run screaming from my 15 points/sec chaos storm. That makes perfect sense.

Hum how do you get users to leave, make a major nerf like this, and walla now the costs are back to normal because new users will never know the difference, only well seasoned users who played the game endlessly.
I for one am think this was a monitary nerf, LETS LOWER THE USER BASE SO OUR COSTS GET BACK IN LINE.
800 thousand users online * X amount for bandwidth
as opposed to
500 thousand online * amount of bandwidth.
Hum sounds like they are making room for the next million copies sold

Disagree again with more in depth reason
In the reports they gave to people that buy stock told them the expect to get a million units sold by the end of the year as an educated guess. They would set up the infrasture to support million this close to the end of the year. The more people play and stay playing = much much better chapter 2 sales.
They have beat there guess and got more money then they expected and can pay for the bandwidth. There part of NCSoft so I highly doubt they are buying stand alone systems at full price. There can use money to expand NCSoft for GW stuff at cheaper price by adding on to the existing infrastructure.
If we started getting lag across the board for everyone I must think about this a reason but still would not beleive they shot themselves in the foot to lose players as the only reason.
(Edit) They would do shotgun to the head by charging for the game and lose people that way and hope to have enough to sustain the infrasture.

But yes, back to topic, I would like this update to be rescinded. I farm legitimately. Someone said somewhere that farming is part of the economy. It is! It gets fresh gold into the system, helping keep prices low by keeping money circulating.
And it's not like I sit there in my mountain, hoarding my gold like Smaug (Tolkien fans enjoy). I make money and get drops. I fairly often give money and drops to my guild so they can get stuff they want, and I don't sell my money on eBay like a sweatshop slave driver, so why are they punishing legitimate farmers who are just earning an honest fake buck?
|
Sorry, but putting fresh gold into the economy doesnt keep prices down. It just leads to inflation. Prices will be higher the more you farm. As someone said earlier, economics is awesome :-p.

you didn't hurt my feelings ne.. I was just basically saying that I liked the way my casters or trapper worked.. right now I can't even use cyclone axe cuz they run from it. That isn't fun.. I thought it was challenging enough trying to get through everything past Droknars Forge. But this is just one gamers opinion..
|
i dont believe cyclone axe was affected by this update.

the update affects aoe "spells." there are many dmg skills that are not "spells."
pretty much all eles have are spells so it is hitting them hard b/c they rely on the aoe dmg. multiply it by the number of eles in party and it nukes everything in its path.
hint for future farmers (not going to give it away) look to skills that are NOT spells for your aoe dmg. they only flee on spells.

OK, I'm getting here late, but let's see if I got this straight:
Since the game came out, many many people whined and bitched about how monsters and henchmen (more so henchmen) stand there and take it when duration AoE's are cast on them. Now, they've finally fixed that, as they should because it was rediculous how many battles I've lost due to Alesia standing in Maelstrom or Meteor Shower instead of doing something useful, and now people whine and bitch instead because they can't do much damage with their precious Firestorm - which, news flash, sucked even when the enemy stood in it the whole time. I'm actually hoping that now that that spell and a couple others like it sucks in PvE just as much as in PvP that Arenanet will finally boost the damage.
Oh, and there's the farmers. Here's a news flash for you guys, too: The world does not revolve around you; Arenanet was most likely trying to be the good guys and fix something lots of people complained about and couldn't care less about how it affects your farming either way. Try using a little bit of your brain and figure out a new way to farm instead of crying like spoiled children.
Did I get it all?

not everyone complaning a/b the new aoe update is farmers. some people are legit nukers that worked hard to get there. now they have to scrap that build and start all over. so ya sure farmers wil cry bout it but they will get over it. eles wil be most effected.

Concerning the whole farming thing, prehaps if gold had a purpose other than esthetics this update would've made sense. My fissure has no advantage over your droks, your black dyed robe is no better than my red, and my collector sword is just as strong as your fellblade.
Also, Hundred Blades isn't making mobs run from me. The same is true for Galrath Slash and Final Thrust.

Let me make this clear.
To all who strawman the anti-patch arguments as a fear of change:
Change is neither inherently good, nor inherently bad, and to assume otherwise is fallacious.
There is nothing good and proper about change and adaptation. Sometimes, things ain't broke and don't need fixin', and other times things are broke and do need fixin'.
This is the former case. Things weren't broke, yet this patch unnecessarily "fixed" an entire class of PvE-oriented attacks. Face it, most area of effect spells are shit. They have huge energy costs, deal minor damage, and take forever to cast and kill. They were only effective because they hit multiple targets, all of which stayed and kept taking damage.
But they aren't effective now. Sure, the cheap AoEs make the enemies move around and waste time, but it's not long before that oversight will be patched, and then what? After that, where will AoE spells be useful? In time, people will realize that there are better ways of dealing damage, most of them involving hexes, conditions, and direct strikes on singular targets. They will abandon the nerfed AoE spells, to the detriment of the game's variety and scope.
In essence, I'm not complaining because I have a negative reaction to change, little skill, low adaptability, or low creativity. I'm complaining because I want to get the most out of this game's design, and by that benchmark this patch is a major step backwards, not forwards. It does not increase the number of useful skills, but instead decreases it, and I think we can all agree that that is not good.

haha, I didn't even think of that! But really, lvl 3 Ice Golems? Flare spam. Or Conjure Phantasm spam. Or Banish. Or using Troll Unguent + Power shot.
You don't actually have to use firestorm to kill them all

im not worried about monsters running away from aoe spells, i dont play those chars anyways, my warrior, necro, and ranger are not effected at all.
what i hate is the new AI on henchmen, i prefered when they stood and took aoe over time spells like monkeys suffering from down syndrome, now they run away from aoe spells AND DO NOTHING, they do NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING, take the damage and do something is what i say
